As Xiaomi Mi 9 was never cheaper than now, many people, including me, are thinking to buy one.
But a “trade war” between the government of the US and China makes to worry about the Xiaomi Mi9 capability of using all its functions. Because this month there was an executive order issued by the United States of America. This order lets the Federal government blacklist foreign companies from conducting business with US-based companies, like Google, Intel and others. Following this executive order, Google issued restrictions on Huawei. With these restrictions:
1. Huawei loses support from Google for the Android system.
2. New smartphones will be not certified by Google, so there will be no Google Mobile Services pre-installed, like Google Play Store, Youtube, Gmail, Google maps and others.
3. Google prohibits, the installation of their application on non-certified devices.
So, as a result, there could be issues with Huawei Android system security updates and with the usage of Google applications, especially, if phones are not certified by Google.
Could Xiaomi be blacklisted by the US government?
If you could not fully use Xiaomi Mi9 functions under the above-mentioned restrictions, it could affect your decision to buy Xiaomi Mi9. So, is there any chance, that the government of the US will issue a ban on Xiaomi, as it is one of the leading Chinese electronics companies?
Although, theoretically, the US sees the potential risk from all Chinese companies, because of law that demands local firms to cooperate with the Chinese government.
But Huawei was banned in the US, not mainly for their smartphones, it’s more for their telecom infrastructure. In the 2012 US Congressional report, Huawei was identified as a national security risk, The report states, that Huawei could somehow build backdoors into their routers and switches, leaking sensitive information to the Chinese government and industry.
Moreover, in August 2018 government use of Huawei tech was banned in the US because of security threats. Also, at the beginning of this year, the US accused Huawei of stealing sensitive information from T-mobile.
So, as you can see, Huawei was seen as a security threat by the US government already from 2012. And all this ruckus from that day between the US and Huawei lead to this month’s executive order, which let to blacklist Huawei.
There is no indication, that Xiaomi, could impose a security threat to the US or any other country. No representative of any state has said, that Xiaomi did something bad or inappropriate. So we can conclude, that it is safe to buy a Xiaomi smartphone.
